I have downloaded my audible books to my iphone 16 pro max. If I can play them through the audible app after cancelling my subscription why should I download them. And, I cannot figure out how to play the downloaded books without using the audible app. thanks

You cannot play them outside the Audible app on the iPhone. They are DRM protected and only the Audible app can play them.
They download into the Audible app only. They are nowhere else on your iPhone.
You can download them on a Mac to the Apple Books App by following the steps from the Audible website though.

If you have a Mac with Books you can sync them to your iPhone. If not, they can only be listened to on the Audible app. If you can listen to them without downloading, that's fine.
