Can't set up Touch ID with new Magic Keyboard

I have a MacBook running OS Sonoma and a recently lost my Magic Keyboard while travelling. Touch ID worked perfectly with that keyboard. But I now bought a New Magic Keyboard and Touch ID will not work with my Macbook from the new keyboard. I tried to create a new fingerprint, but it kept saying rest your finger longer, and then new fingerprint cannot be added. I am very frustrated. Help please.
