My iMac ‘19 is slow to startup, and respond. Sometimes I get a grey screen before the desktop makes an appearance. This could take 10 minutes. Should I clear my caches, if so how? And how do I know which to clear?
the current os is Sonoma 14.16.1
Slowness can be caused by many things including drive issues or just software issues. One great way to allow others here to help diagnose your Mac's issue is to use the utility called EtreCheck (https://etrecheck.com/en/index.html) to scan your Mac. It will produce a report of diagnostic items that you can post here so others can give you suggestions on solutions.
