Can't add credit card to apple wallet

Recently got a new card from my bank. Unable to load it onto apple wallet. Had no issues with previous card.

I have tried so many different things.

  1. tried to different visa cards from different banks to rule out issue with the card. same problem. none work. so it's clearly not the bank
  2. reset network settings
  3. signed out my apple id
  4. removed wallet app and reinstalled
  5. did hard reboot
  6. checked location settings (canada), time
  7. updated my phone

When I called my bank (TD CanadaTrust) they said remove the TD bank app, then update my phone iOS - then reinstall bank app - .....did that also ; nothing doing.

From the number of posts on this topic ; this seems to be a common problem.

It appears to me that this is clearly an apple issue, they can't possibly blame the bank, since I have tried 3 different cards, from three different banks.

This is so frustrating, since I (like so many others) use apple pay a great deal ; so handy to not have to reach for your credit card at the drive thru.

Apple lets go ; fix this already.

I understand and sorry I don’t have any additional details to share. My major bank is JP Morgan Chase and I’m delighted with my experience. I rarely see anyone having issues with their cards. Several other large banks fall into that category too.

Unfortunately, the two I probably see the most issues with are TD and Lloyds. There are several European FinTechs that I see a lot of too. But overall it’s a very smooth experience for the vast majority of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet users.

Good luck and I hope everything works out for you soon.

i’m sorry I thought I posted it rather clearly I was attempting to add different cards to my Apple wallet to eliminate the possibility that the problem lies with the bank. I don’t want to use any of my other cards. I have a primary card that I’m trying to add all I care about is one card, but I tried the others just in case to rule out if it’s a bank problem, it clearly is not a bank problem because none of the other cards were able to be added Either.

Can you really help me with this problem?

I can tell you what the issue is, but I need to understand what’s going on. For example, removing cards from the Wallet and then trying to add them back typically triggers a fraud issue for the Payment Network Operators (Visa, Mastercard, American Express etc.).

When you attempt to add a card to Apple Wallet, basic information about your device and you are transmitted to the PNO. This information includes device model, iOS version, your name, address, and information about your accounts with Apple. This includes your Apple Account, iTunes account, App Store account etc. Also, if available, location information and iPhone usage such as if you use your messaging, email and telephone. This information is used by the PNO to identify potential fraudulent activity.

Once the PNO approves adding the card, data is sent to your bank for their approval. Once approved, account information is sent to the Token Service Provider (TSP) and they generate a dynamic token that represents your card. The TSP sends the token to Apple Servers and Apple adds the token to the Secure Element (SE). Your Wallet app can access tokens in the SE and send the dynamic payment information to the merchant when a transaction is made.

So, that’s the condensed version and everything is encrypted and sent securely.

The two approval authorities are the PNO and your bank. Here’s the test. Ask TD bank if they’re receiving the data from the PNO. It’s a yes no question. If they say no, it’s a PNO issue. If they say yes, it’s a bank issue. If the bank won’t commit, ask why your card is being Red Flowed. That’s the term the PNO’s use to say adding your card presents too high a risk.

hello Jeff, thank you for your feedback. I appreciate the elaborate explanation although I highly doubt that’s the problem since I tried several different credit cards from several different banks so I really don’t think this whole token issue would apply to several different banks coincidentally, I truly appreciate all the effort you’ve put into this, but I really don’t think that’s the solution. I think there’s a glitch in the Apple software

You sound like you know what you’re talking about however, I think you’re making something way too complicated. Also, it doesn’t make sense to four different banks would have this whole token problem that you’re explaining which I did see this explained on the Internet on another posting.

once again, let me elaborate I had a credit card. My credit card number had to be changed. I was using that credit card for the past several years on my Apple iPhone for Apple Pay. It worked fine for many many years. I had to get a new card when I attempted to load the new card onto my Apple Pay all these problems, the old card was removed because it was Frauded …. Again, I repeat at the same time I tried different credit cards from different banks all resulted in the same problem in message so I highly doubt that they all have this token problem that you’re describing, but I truly appreciate all your effort to try and explain it to me.

fyi … i was successful in adding one of my credit cards to iphone apple wallet… it’s not my preferred card but at least this now appears to indicate it’s not an ios issue but rather with the banks… it’s odd though that several of my cards all failed to be added

i will contact the digital services

dept of my bank and provide them with your explanation…. hopefully this works out

interestingly i was successful to add my preferred card to my iWatch …if it’s a banking issue why would i be able to add it to my iWatch but not to phone wallet

thanks for your help

hi jeff

follow up for you - still no luck with TD CANADATRUST - to add td visa to wallet.

very poor customer service, they wasted my time trying different silly things.

they now claim they are aware of the issue, but have no timeline as to when the issue will be solved.

i find this unacceptable for a bank, with their resources.

i miss apple pay - especially at restaurant drive-thru -

i even wiped my phone clean - and restored from icloud - to see if that would help - just made matters worse - since i had succeeded to load the td visa on my apple watch - (prior to wiping my phone) - after the restore - the visa was gone from my wallet - and now i'm getting the same error message when i try to add my visa back to my apple watch.

frustrated.
