Slow Fiber Broadband WiFi Speed Improved By Removing USB Hub

I recently upgraded from Spectrum cable to a Hunter Communications fiber-optic broadband account. While our M1 MacBook Air tested at over 350Mbps at the same location as a 2018 Intel Mac Mini, the Mini's speed-test results was approximately 1/10th of the MBA download speed.

Thanks to the info at the now-closed forum discussion at Mac Mini Slow Internet RESOLVED! - Apple Community , I removed a Sabrent USB hub from the vicinity of the Mac Mini and the Mini's WiFi download speed has doubled.

I need to do some more trouble-shooting because the Mini is still too slow. (I tried placing the Mini on its side since its internal WiFi antenna is near the bottom of its case but it does not improve its speed-test results.) But I seem to be on the right track and it gives me hope that I can further improve the Mini's WiFi speed.

"Disabling the Mac Mini's Bluetooth improved its WiFi download speed to the mid-300Mbps range. Bluetooth and WiFi has always been problematic with this Mini; fortunately, I have no need for Bluetooth while using it."

Troubleshooting Mac WiFi and Bluetooth:

A. Troubleshooting Mac WiFi:

A few thoughts to try...

I. Clear the Temporary Internet Files:

II. Restart your Router:

  1. Power: off the router
  2. Wait: 30 seconds
  3. Power: It back on

III. Boot in Safe Mode:

In Safe ModeLogin Items do not run at login, certain preferences are set aside, and damaged system files are then reset. So, once booted in to Safe Mode, wait 30 seconds, and then boot up normally, attempting another update install. For instructions, go here: How to Use safe Mode on your Mac - Apple Support

B. Troubleshooting Bluetooth Connectivity:

A few thoughts to try...

I. Go Here: Connect a Bluetooth Device with your Mac - Apple Support

II. Bluetooth: If a Bluetooth headset doesn’t work with Mac - Apple Support

III. USB Dongles:

Use the MacBook Pro's builtin Bluetooth adapter (Not a USB Bluetooth Dongle), You would only need to connect it once with the MacBook Pro. When you no longer need to use it, just delete it from the list of devices.

Amplifying the Signal:

You'll need to boost the signal with a range extender, or connect it to your router, using Ethernet. If you don't have Ethernet, then this is the adapter to get: Belkin USB-C to 2.5Gb Ethernet Adapter - Apple
