Câmera / Reduction in Resolution in Portrait Mode with 2x Zoom on iPhone 16 Pro Max

Dear Apple Support,

I recently purchased an iPhone 16 Pro Max and noticed that when using Portrait Mode with 2x zoom, photos are being captured at a resolution of 9 megapixels. Previously, I had an iPhone 14 Pro Max, where photos in the same mode were captured at 12 megapixels.

This feature is very important to me, and the reduction in resolution affects the quality of my photos. I would like to know if there is any setting that can be adjusted to restore the previous resolution or if there are plans to address this issue in future software updates.

I appreciate your attention and look forward to your response.

Best regards,

iPhone 16 Pro Max, iOS 18

So, resolution is height by width (8000 X 6000 =48,000,000 or 48 megapixel). A 12 megapixel file will be approximately 4000 X 3000. Here I’m duplicating your example.

The first shoot is a screenshot of the camera and the settings, 2X and Portrait mode.

The second shot is the actual image.

The third image is a screenshot of the actual image and the Info screen at the bottom. It shows 12 MP resolution, format (JPEG) and the settings used and file size. The settings include 2X lens and 12 MP.

Please post examples of your 9 MP image and the corresponding settings.

Jeff will get scientific with you, which I'm sure will be helpful. What I'd like to know is what value you might get from using Portrait Mode of for example the plug you showed a photo off? It doesn't represent what Portrait mode is intended for, so help us understand what you were actually trying to accomplish. Often we don't get desirable results when we use the wrong mode for a scene.

A photo of the outlet was just an example. No matter what I capture, the maximum resolution I get is 9 MP, while on my iPhone 14 Pro Max, I used to get 12 MP in the same Portrait Mode with 2x zoom.

This reduction in resolution significantly impacts image quality, and I noticed a visible difference compared to my previous device. I’ve checked my camera settings, ensured my iPhone is up to date, and tested different shooting conditions, but I still can’t get past 9 MP.

What is the resolution of the 14 PM in 16:9? Just do the math.

Look at your iPhone images above and resolution is 2268 X 4032 = 9,144,576. What is the resolution of 16:9 on the 14 PM? It will be about the same. All Apple camera sensors have been 4:3 since the very first iPhone. The 16:9 ratio is cropped for the 4:3 sensor, thus lower resolution.

You can test it yourself. The 1X lens produces about 18 MP images at 16:9 because it uses 48 MP image to crop from. Use the 2X and divide 18 by 2 and you have 9 MP.
