If you are thinking about upgrading the internal SSD, forget it.

Reports say that the flash chips are on a separate board from the motherboard. However,

  • This is an Apple-specific raw flash module – not a standard M.2 NVMe SSD.
  • Part of the controller for the SSD is in the M4 or M4 Pro chip.
  • Even if you could find and install a replacement part, you would probably need the help of another Mac, running a special tool, to make the Mac mini usable again, thanks to the need to cryptographically synchronize the contents of the SSD and the encryption/decryption keys held in the M4 or M4 Pro chip.

The SSD may be upgraded however it takes a master tech to do the work and even then there is an excellent chance of bricking the Mac. In addition another M based Mac is needed in order to install Mac OS onto the new SSD. Finally not any SSD will work, it has to be one specifically made for the MM. Yes, that is the ONLY way it will work.

If the OP is attempting to upgrade a MM’s storage, I’d STRONGLY recommend forgetting it and if you want additional storage to do like the rest of us, belly up to the bar and pay for it!

Thanks for the info.

i already bought the 2024 m4 mm with 2T storage.

that said, I need to transfer my 2T blade with all of my dodads onto it. But it is taking too **** long. Soooo, thought I would just take the mm apart to lodge the ssd onto a ssd cloner to speed it up. Can’t wait on the already programmed one as I use it frequently so need to make the switch as fast as I can.

have hints?

thanks.
