Why are my MP3s showing up as podcasts in iTunes?

1st problem - i have added a bunch of mp3 into the itunes library but they show up as podcasts. I was able to change their media type to music thru the options tab, but they still show up in the podcasts list on itunes.

2nd problem - i am not able to play these mp3s on iphone. i can see them listed in the library but they dont play. What could be the issue?

My guess would be that you have installed at least one of the following apps; Apple Music, Apple TV, or Apple Devices. Installing any of these modifies iTunes such that it then only handles audiobooks and podcasts, which nearly all other features being suppressed. Remove each of the newer apps that you have installed and iTunes should go back to normal.
