Fitness app miscalculating distance on iPhone

My fitness app has started miscalculating the distance of my jogs and, by extension, the number of calories burned. It used to judge my jog as being over 12km long but now it judges it as being 10km or under.

I am running the exact same distance as I used to but just getting different results on my fitness app. How do I fix this?

It may be determining the length of your stride…

I have a 2-mile walking course. I get a different step count and calorie burn reported when I faithfully walk that same course in different directions.

When I walk the course clockwise, it is a gradual, continuous, half-mile uphill elevation change followed by flat terrain for a mile, and then a pronounced, last half-mile downhill leg back to the house. When I walk it in reverse, I am taking shorter steps tackling the significant uphill grade, and I believe that is what changes the reported steps/distance and calorie burn.

If you are jogging in-place waiting on traffic, that will be a different calorie burn than uphill or downhill running.
