Why are my iTunes songs grayed out on my iPhone?

I use iTunes to create playlists and have several. I worked on these over time for years. I began syncing my iPhone (15 Pro Max) and soon discovered that, not only were many songs not brought over to my phone, but it was actually also removing songs from my playlists on iTunes. Infuriating. So, after working on getting those back up, I no longer use sync. I am now manually adding songs into newly created playlists on my phone that match iTunes.

Now, I'm seeing that, in some cases, nearly an entire playlist is grayed out and will not play. The songs are also not showing on my phone. In many cases, these are songs I actually purchased from the iTunes store. Also, a huge number of songs that were ripped from CDs are not showing.

I DO NOT subscribe or have Apple Music. I do not want it. This was never a problem before its inception. I understand the "matching" thing, but I am not an Apple Music customer, so why in the world would it not recognize song files that are on the phone? These files exist and should be able to be played.

Apologies if this is an issue that has already been addressed, but every "solution" I have found mentions Apple Music and to ensure I'm subscribed and signed-in. No and no, because I don't want it or need it.

Also, I do not use the iCloud, but am open to the possibility some settings are conflicting. BUT, again, no thread I've been able to find here or elsewhere seems to talk about my exact problem.

I will add that I am using a very old HP desktop PC currently for iTunes. Still have Windows 10. I have a hard time believing this is the issue since it has never been before, but what do I know? I just want the songs that I OWN to play on my device.

Thanks to anyone who can provide any assistance.

Deleting all songs from the phone is the work of a few taps. If you sync with selected playlists from the library putting them back doesn't take much longer. I appreciate you've opted for manual management at this stage, but now might be the time to revisit that decision. Regular backups of your library should protect against unwanted playlist corruption.

And, of course, this only works for some songs. I have a song actually PURCHASED FROM iTUNES that absolutely will not copy over. Ridiculous! Beginning to wonder if Samsung or other devices if this problem. Maddening.

If you are signed into your Apple ID your unhidden purchase history is available to stream or download to the device. Check automatic downloads are not enabled. Perhaps iTunes still sees some sort of clash. I'll assume the computer is authorized to your Apple ID. You might try signing out of the Apple ID for music on device, see if you can add locally stored purchases then, then sign in again. Alternatively hiding your purchases may help, and is a good move if you've made custom changes to metadata as this can sometime display the original iTunes store details rather than your edits.

You may be worrying about a bug in a past version of iTunes that has since been rectified. I cannot say for sure as I now use the Apple Music service but for a long time I would sync selected playlists to my iPod classic, iPhone, and iPad, and they would generally copy exactly as supposed to. When I did need to reset the devices for whatever reason rebuilding was straightforward as I simply had to select a playlist folder dedicated to that device.

So, I've discovered that deleting them and readding them individually fixes the issue, for the most part. It usually takes 2-3 tries, but they will eventually load and are no longer grayed out. Since there are thousands grayed out, this will be total drudgery, so I'm just doing a few at a time to save my sanity.

There is one major exception. I double click and play each song before readding to the phone and, with several, I get the "authorize this computer pop-up." In these cases, I have to remove the download and re-download the song. However, this removes the song from any playlist you have in iTunes, so be sure you note where the songs currently reside so you can readd them to the playlists that they were in previously. Also, if you added your own artwork, you will need to readd that, as well.

Again, total drudgery. Apple will never do anything about this because it's simply not a priority for them. I will definitely be researching other phone makers for future purchases.
