Insertion point not working in Pages for text editing

When trying to edit existing text in Pages, I have an insertion point. I can move it around within the text, but it will not “set” or “place” itself within the text. In other words, it stay stationary where I am trying to make the insert. So I can’t make any edits. If I try to put the insertion point within a word, it just selects and grays out the entire word. This just started happening during the past few weeks.
