In some of my playlists I have columns for the song title, album and time etc. In others some columns are missing. For example the album may be listed under the track title rather than in its own column. I cannot find a method of adding and deleting columns ? I suspect that like the loss of the 4 quadrant playlist picture this has simply slipped into obscurity during a poorly planned update?

Make sure the playlist is set for View > As Songs. Then go to View > Show View Options and you can check or uncheck columns to your preference.
Note that the options you select will apply to that playlist only, and have to be re-selected for each playlist.
That’s the core of the issue. It didn’t used to be as evidenced by the majority of my playlists which appear ‘correct’. It seems to have happened with a recent upgrade(?downgrade) like the 4 quadrant image header
ed2345 Thanks for your input, but that’s not what I asked! I don’t want them as a song list. I want to show it using the playlist option. As said in the OP, I have some which show separate columns for Album etc but some which only show a couple of columns and do not show an album except under the song title. After 50 years of Mac use these little things are very frustrating, just like the changes to the image options in the playlist view discussed elsewhere
Ross - OK, I apparently misread your post, probably since I pay no attention to View > As Playlist. ;-) But anyway, in the "playlist view," I am not aware of options to control the display of fields or columns. In fact, except for "songs view," the format seems to be pretty much canned, and the view options are minimal or non-existent.
