Syncing Apple Music with MP3s on a new external drive while retaining metadata

I have a huge library of mp3s stored on an older external hard drive. On my iMac, the Apple Music playlists are linked to those mp3 files on the older hard drive.

To avoid the catastrophe of losing everything to a failed hard drive, I have copied the entire library of mp3s from the older drive to a new external SSD drive.

My problem is that I cannot figure out how to sync Apple Music to the mp3s on the new external drive - but still retain all the metadata (playlists, ratings, comments, etc.). I have been curating my music collection in iTunes/Music for 20 years and I don't want to inadvertently lose all that metadata in the process!

FYI - I have spent two hours researching this issue but have not found a clear answer. There is a lot of info on how to migrate music files that have been copied to the computer's Media folder...but that is not the problem I am trying to solve.

Thanks for your kind assistance!

Hi Prof.

If you've already copied the files to the new drive, in exactly the same layout, then it may just be a matter of changing the name of the old drive to say <Volume Name> (Old) and the new one to <Volume Name> so that Music looks for the content on the new drive instead of the old one.

You would need to copy the MusicLibrary.musiclibrary file that references those mp3s to the SSD and then point the Apple Music app to that file by holding down the option key when starting the Music App and navigating to it. Assuming of course the MP3s are in exactly the same location on the new drive as they were on the old one.

The files need to be placed wherever the library file expects them to be.

If they were not in the external drive, they need to be placed on the Mac in the same location they were in before.

You can alternatively try to play one of the missing songs and when it fails it will ask you to try to find it, it can then use the location of that song to try to determine the location of the rest so you don't have to do so manually.

Outside of that, you would need run some type of script to rebuild the file locations in the music library database.

Our resident iTunes and Music Library guru turingtest2’s might have something that can help. I'll see if I can get him to chime in to this thread.

Thanks for the quick response, Phil0124.

I followed your instructions and indeed the playlists were recreated with their metadata intact.

The only problem is that many (most) of the songs in those playlist were not located on the new drive, with the only option to manually relink those music files. That would require a massive effort as most of the playlists are compiled from dozens or hundreds of different albums.

Thanks again for the assistance. Hopefully someone can offer a optional solution that alleviates this linking issue.
