If you move your iMovie library to another destination, the iMovie app will still reference it when you open it in that library. Simply double click on the library's icon. As I mentioned in an earlier response, before transferring an iMovie library to an external drive the drive must be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or APFS. Be aware that when one reformats a drive, the reformatting process will delete all data that is already on the drive.

The original unedited video clips are in the iMovie library. So, the original media will travel along with the library.
Any previously exported (shared out) videos are independent of the iMovie library and the iMovie app, and therefore do not have to be moved when you move the library. They can remain where they were.
The iMovie app and the iMovie Library are separate, and you can move the iMovie Library without moving the iMovie app. The iMovie app should remain on your computer's internal drive.

Hi,
You can move an exported iMovie video to any destination that you want. Exported movies are independent of the project itself. Some web destinations may have specific format requirements with which you would need to comply.

To save disk space, you can move your videos to an external drive formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or APFS. If you don't intend to move your iMovie library or photos app to the external drive, you can use the format ExFat.
