Can't access App Store account information

When signed into App Store, and then submitting login credentials to view the App Store account info, the following message appears:

An unexpected error occurred while signing in. The data couldn’t be read because it isn’t in the correct format.

2017 iMac 4K

System 10.12.6

App Store 2.2.1

Apple ID, iTunes, iCloud logins all work as expected using the same login credentials. The issue is with App Store account login only. Today is 1/31/25 and App Store login was working as expected just a few days ago. I haven't changed anything on the system. I've tried all of the suggested fixes that I could find and so far no luck. And no, I won't be updating the system, at least for a little while longer.

As of 1/24/25, Apple has indeed made changes that lock out older versions of App Store as well as those apps that make use of on-device receipt validation. See here for more info:

TN3138: Handling App Store receipt signing certificate changes | Apple Developer Documentation

They've been rolling this out slowly but steadily, and now the time has come for those of us who rely on older apps and systems to feel the pain. Time marches on and I suppose this counts as "progress", but it's going to hurt a lot of people. So far this affects only one app for me. It's a crucially important app, but I have workarounds and will continue to use my old system. When you purchased that app with a "perpetual" license, Apple has now unilaterally rendered that contract null and void. The developers, if they are still around, won't be issuing an update. Why would they?

Update: signing out of App Store then signing back in failed with the same "unexpected error". Signing out of iCloud and back in automatically signed in to App Store. This allows viewing of purchases, but not access to App Store account information, which is necessary to run certain apps purchased via App Store. When selecting Store/View My Account a Console error indicates that for the process "kernel" "loginwindow is not entitled". This occurs before a password is entered. It appears to be something to do with the login window function only. Everything else works.

I have the same issue that just started recently when I tried to open an app on an older MacBook pro - 2011 running 10.12.6. I do not have this issue on my MacBook Air 2020 running 10.15.7.

same issue is reported by McCorkleVideo Jan. 29/25 under the title "unexpected error occurred while signing in' when login into App Store

also note developers have been talking about this issue for a number of years - one thought it might be linked to Screentime - on another forum a person said it started after using I believe disk utility in trying to speed up their machine - final comment on yet another forum a person said they put in a ticket with Apple support about the issue and would update when they received a response - the was closed a year later in 2022 with no update so presumably they never did receive a response

I also have a 2020 MacBook Air and everything works as expected. I have read many posts on this topic, here and elsewhere, many offering "solutions", none of which work for me. I've seen screenshots of this happening with up to date systems, so it would seem that it's not due to simply running an older system. My first thought was that Apple must have changed something behind the scenes, but now I'm not sure. One additional clue: signing out of App Store and signing back in did not work. In fact, I was not able to sign back in unless I was first signed in to Apple ID. With that, I can sign in to App Store, but still can't access App Store account information. One more additional clue: I have an app, purchased via App Store, that now won't run unless I sign in using the email address and password that was used when originally purchased, which is not possible since those creds have long ago been changed for security reasons. I'll continue to hack away and will post if successful.

Thanks for keeping at this hogeye. I'm not surprised at the answer. As in your case this currently only affects one of my apps. Thankfully it still works on my MB Air and my iphone (although I haven't tried it today). I only have a few apps I feel are very important and as this happens to more of them (reading on another forum it appears the developers of my favourite reading app for well over a decade have given up on Apple restrictions, not even willing to continue with a subscription model), I'll have to find my own work around, or listen to my friends and move away from Apple. As you say, time marches on, and I understand I'm only a microscopic blip on the radar. All I can say at this point is it was fun while it lasted.

Thanks again
