Podcast playback position not retained on Apple Watch with Apple Podcasts

On my Apple Watch, the Apple Podcast player does not retain the playback position if I get a text or another app, such as the Workout app, interrupts the playing of a podcast. When I go back to the podcast the position is either where I started it or where it was last interrupted, and I have to fast forward and try to find where I was. This is a recent (within last month) problem. I am using an apple watch ultra and all software is up to date.
