Merging music libraries between two Apple devices without duplicates

I have an iPad and MacBook, both with their own music libraries. How do I merge/sync them without duplicating the common songs?

Apple Music vs Downloaded Music Sync Hi Everyone, I am trying to find out what will happen if I sync my Apple Music. Bit of background - I have a ton of music that was downloaded years ago. I now have a large part of that on my phone in what would’ve previously been iTunes. It is now separate from Apple Music - but they all fall under the same app now on iPhone. I also subscribe and use Apple Music separately. Sometimes I’d like to add a song from Apple Music to one of my own made playlists but Apple says I need to sync. I purposely do not sync and have selected “manage music manually” on my Mac. I guess my question is - is there anyway to combine the two? To keep all of my downloaded music on my phone as is and combine with music from Apple Music? Can they exist together? it’s a tall ask to go through the thousands of songs already on the phone, brought over from my computer, and try to organize that all over again. I did try using iTunes Match to clean up some of it but unfortunately did not solve my problem of having the two libraries of music exist together in one neat location. I hope I am explaining this clearly. In my head it makes sense but not sure I’ve written it down clearly. thanks in advance for any help you can provide

Listening to Music simultaneously on two devices Hi. Before I had Apple Music I used to upload some of my library on my iPhone. If I went for a run I could listen to this while my wife listened to the same library on a Mac at home (same Apple ID). I have now got Apple Music and have used sync my library to make my whole library available on my phone (plus some added music from Apple Music that I’ve added). My question is, can we still continue to listen simultaneously on two devices with the same Apple ID as we did before? Will it depend on whether what we are listening is Apple Music streamed content or content we actually physically own and have saved to the Mac? hope that makes sense?! thanks! Tom

How can I share music between my Apple devices? I have music on my Mac, myiPad and my iPhone. How do I sync them so I can use them when I'm not in my office or home?

Apple don't really make it easy to copy media from their devices. You're supposed to keep everything on your computer, and make backups. See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - Apple Community. The easiest method may be a temporary subscription to the Apple Music service, merging the music on the device into an iCloud Music Library which you then download to a computer and backup for security.

Apple Music will generally eliminate duplicates as well, however see Duplicate songs in iTunes/Music - Apple Community if you decide to use a different method to extract your music, or still have duplicates that you need to eliminate.
