Rare Apple Pay issue iPhone 16 Pro

I exclusively use Apple Pay and no longer carry a wallet. At a store that accepts Apple Pay, their EFTPOS machine did not recognize my iPhone 16 Pro’s Apple Wallet. Despite trying different cards and the Apple Watch, the issue persisted. The store manager explained that the iPhone’s security protocols were different and not yet updated on their devices. I am surprised this hasn’t happened at other stores and thought to see if the community knows of potential changes in Apple Pay security protocols.

This sounds like a NFC issue. It could be related to the iPhone case, if any, or be defective NFC module/antenna. Apple Remote diagnostics can examine and verify its operation.

You’re the first person reporting this issue and there are several long posts about the changes Australia made in regard to EFTPOS cards.

Some merchants just don’t accept Apple Pay. For example, Walmart does not accept Apple Pay in the US.

There may be apps in the Australian Apple App Store that can verify NFC operations. You can also contact Apple Support and they can test it remotely or in an Apple Store.

Apple Pay is not working at a retail franchise with multiple locations in my area, they are quite a large company and I haven’t tried any of their other locations. The issue was present before December 31, 2024, I ran into the issue a week before Christmas. Additionally, the same problem occurs with my local petrol station, where their EFTPOS terminals also fail to recognise the iPhone and I ran into that issue in October when I switched from my 14 Pro. Also wanted to point out that the merchant said it was only the newer 16 Pro models that were not working.
