Remove Formatting in iPhone Mail

I’ve used iPhone Mail often, but the latest release is driving me insane. I can’t remove Mail text formatting!

Whenever I paste text to the Mail app, I expect it to use the default font and size. Instead, Apple Mail uses a different default style that doesn’t align with the original Mail format.

Apple, instead of adding unnecessary features that clutter the Mail interface (hundreds of fonts, emojis, etc), please try to simplify this experience by just giving users a non-rich text layout. I just want to send normal emails without being distracted with unnecessary options.

I agree with you completely. I'm going to complain for a bit first but then have what may have a tip that you may find useful.

On a Mac, I find myself composing nearly everything that I do during the day in BBEdit so that I don't need to deal with the copy or paste with formatting issues that occur with nearly every application. I even have several scripted filters that I use regularly to strip out all of the garbage formatting that comes from the web and other sources. At least on a Mac there are convenient keyboard shortcuts and a mouse for "paste without formatting" functionality (e.g. shift+command+V, etc).

However, on iPhone, it's certainly far more annoying simply because it takes numerous steps to rid copied content of formatting when compiling content from sources. My go-to has always been to use the app Textastic when I run across a challenge related to formatted text that needs to be stripped of formatting.

  1. The one useful tip that I have is to try:
  2. Select text like normal in iOS
  3. Instead of tapping "Copy", tap "Share" instead ... and then Copy
  4. That results in the copy of unformatted text that you can then paste into Mail
