How to delete Untitled Data on a Fusion Drive

My 27" Fusion Drive suddenly ballooned in size. For some reason I accumulated 2.44 TB of

Untitled Data on Container disk2. How can I get rid of this without reformatting the Fusion Drive?

If I understand you correctly you accidentally copied the TM backup set to your Data volume. If that's the case, you should be able to locate it with the Finder, and then, delete it. What I can't tell is what doing that did to the original data on that volume. It either added itself or overwrote it.

If you can't delete it via Finder, then you will need to completely erase your Fusion Drive, and then, reinstall a fresh copy of macOS. This should create the appropriate APFS container & volumes on the Fusion Drive. You would then restore your apps/data from a TM backup. This time be careful to choose the correct volume to restore that data to.

This should not happen "automatically," without user intervention. By default, macOS on an APFS container will have two volumes: Macintosh HD & Macintosh HD - Data. This would be true for Fusion drives, as well. Something does not add up with the Disk Utility images you provided.

Regardless, please post a screen shot of the results of using the following command in the Terminal app:

  • diskutil list internal

Thanks for the screenshot of the results.

Ok, let's take a look.

  • /dev/disk0 is the Fusion Drive's SSD
  • /dev/disk1 is the Fusion Drive's HDD
  • /dev/disk2 is an APFS container of the Fusion Drive as a whole

So far, so good. Now let's look a little deeper at the APFS container: disk2

  • macOS uses two volumes as a volume set. By default, these would be named Macintosh HD & Macintosh HD - Data
  • At some point they were renamed to "27" iMac" and "Untitled - Data - Data." Again this would not happen by itself. Could you please provide what steps you took to get to this configuration? For example, did you have to rebuilt the Fusion Drive, or reinstall macOS recently?
  • The other volumes in this container (Preboot, Recovery, & VM) are normal for an APFS container.

The key here is, other than the modified names, there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with your Fusion Drive. If you attempt to erase the "Untitled - Data - Data" volume, you will end up deleting all of your apps/data, and would have to restore them from a recent backup.

Yes, I did have renamed disk 2 when I had problems formatting the fusion drive.

The "Untitled Data" happened when I placed a Backup backupdb folder on the wrong external drive.

When I tried to delete it through Time Machine, it ejected and unmounted the drive.

I was able to retrieve all the data and loaded it on to the iMac, then erased the external drive, put all

the data (except the Backup backupdb) back on and than deleted the folder from the external drive

on the iMac. It seems that the backup from the external HD is the "Untitled Data" on disk 2.

Hopefully I explained the situation clearly.

Is there anything I can do to get rid of the Untitled Data?

If I were to make a Time Machine back up, would the Untitled Data on disk2 be included?
