Do Smart Folders in Notes require manual sorting?

I’ve started to use smart folders. However will I still need to manually move the notes into a folder so they don’t sit in notes indefinitely

Your question is a bit confusing. Any note you create will be in the Notes app until you delete it. Any note you create will be in the "All iCloud" (or whatever account you use) folder until you delete it. You will see notes in the "Notes" when they are not in other folders.
