Hi Fred,
Re: My screen saver isn't working : MacBook Air M2 (running Sequoia
Thank you for explaing, for sharing those details, and wat you tried already.
Seems the thing is, for when Mac is idle, to ensure the screen-saver is set to begin in a shorter time than that set for the screen to sleep. You may need to check or change one or both settings.
For Screen saver:
choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Screen Saver in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
Look for Lock Screen Settings: "The Lock Screen Settings button appears only when you set up your display to sleep before the screen saver starts."
"Change how long your Mac can be inactive before the screen saver starts"
Above details are from: Change Screen Saver settings on Mac - Apple Support. which has more info.

Else: If you need to change the length of time the screen locks when idle to be longer than that set for the screen-saver to begin: See: Change Lock Screen settings on Mac - Apple Support:
Eg: says:
choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Lock Screen in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
Tnen:
"Require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off"
Lock your Mac when it’s left in an idle state. When the Mac wakes, a user login password must be entered before the Mac can be used. You can select the amount of time after the screen saver or sleep begins before a password is required.
See "Turn display off on battery when inactive"
Choose how long your Mac can be inactive when running on battery power before the screen saver starts.
and see: "Turn display off on power adapter when inactive"
Choose how long your Mac can be inactive when connected to a power adapter before the screen saver starts.
More settings info in the above article if needed.
