The iPad Pro 10.5" still receives iPadOS 17.x security updates (the most recent being iPadOS 17.7.3) - but is not capable of update to iPadOS 18.x.

Contributors here are all end-users, just like you. We have absolutely no inside knowledge of Apple's internal release plans beyond information publicly released by Apple.

That said, there's no reason to assume that additional security updates will cease any time soon for devices running iPadOS 17.x.

While Apple does not pre-announce end of update support for any device, history demonstrates that it is perhaps reasonable to anticipate occasional security updates for at least the next year - as new security threats are identified and patched.

Hard to say but to be quite honest: if you didn’t buy this particular model used just last year it’s maybe a good time to think about getting a more recent model.

I got mine just when it came out in 2017 and just like yours it still goes strong at anything but very recent demanding game titles (which it also can still play but the battery is showing its age of course). And we finally got a calculator! /s

The best invest in a tech gadget I made and my next tablet will again be an iPad of course. Apple really keeps the promise of supporting their hardware for years to come. And at some point it’s just understandable that the hardware is getting so outdated that it might not guarantee enough security anymore.

You can call me an Apple evangelist but I rather stick with a company which charges a premium but also delivers a premium device that isn’t a brick of tech after 2-3 years and won’t receive security updates anymore (looking at those other manufacturers).

The new M4 iPads look promising, so maybe it’s also time for me to get a successor to my old, trusty 10.5” and let it enjoy it’s retirement-drawer/shelf… 🥲
