Stuck on large app icons iPad Pro 3rd gen

After I upgraded to iPadOS 18, I switched on large app icons for a while. After deciding I didn't like it, I went to settings to switch back to regular size icons, but to my dismay flipping the switch does not change the icons back to normal size anymore. I've tried everything I can think of (flip the switch to large, restart iPad, flip back to normal; update to the latest version (which I have done like 3 times by now); remove all widgets (which was suggested here); wipe the iPad and restore from backup) but absolutely nothing works. I can't really find anyone with the same problem online either, so I'm at a loss...
