When my phone unlocks (usually with FaceID) this strange blue ring flashes around the dynamic island front camera then disappears.
I have no idea what it is or what it's trying to tell me the phone is doing.
Anyone know what's going on?

I believe that is the TrueDepth camera that is used for Face ID. It is meant to indicate your face is being scanned etc. in order to unlock your iPhone.

I thought this could be what's happening too.
I cannot find anything by Apple that identifies this icon or even explains why it happens or why it's there.

I've deactivated the "Require attention for Face ID" option in settings and it seems to have stopped the icon from appearing.
I think you’re correct. Now that I think about it, True Depth camera is on left side. Front Camera is on right side. The camera is used for attention awareness for several features.
