I need to update from Montery 12.7.6 in order to get the free student version of Microsoft Office free. My Mac shows this is the latest software update but Microsoft Office needs macOS 13 or higher. Please help
Do you have Apple's own office apps installed? Pages, Numbers, KeyNote?
Another option is to use the free open source office suite LibreOffice.
Otherwise you will need to purchase a newer laptop that is compatible with Sonoma or Sequoia (Ventura will only be supported until the end of 2025).

If your Mac's Software Update panel is maxed out at Monterey 12.7.6, and no further upgrades (e.g. to Ventura 13, Sonoma 14, or Sequoia 15) are offered, then you will need to purchase a new/er Mac that is capable of running one of these supported operating systems.
When you open the Apple menu () > About this Mac panel, what is the description and year of your Mac? Do not post this panel with its Mac serial number.

You need a 2017 or later Mac to install macOS 13 Ventura.
