iPhone not automatically backing up over mobile data despite all conditions being met

Plenty of space on iCloud, "back up over mobile data" turned on, good connection, true flat, iPhone locked, charging, yet it still does not automatically back up. Instead, I'm getting a reminder after 2 weeks.


This question was already asked, yet no solution was provided yet. Shall I file a bug report?

I have the same issue but over wifi. I got a message that my iPhone has bot backed up in 2 weeks. I have my phone charging in nightstand mode next to me. I have been doing that for a year. Now for some reason is not backing up. I did a manual backup yesterday and it took several minutes to backup.

Is it possible there is no data to backup? When you manually backup your iPhone how much time does it take?


iCloud backups

With a Wi-Fi network connection, you can back up your device using iCloud. You don't need to plug your device into a computer to back up with iCloud. 


iCloud backups include all the information and settings stored on your device that don't already sync to iCloud. iCloud backups don't include:


  • Data that you already store and sync in iCloud, like Contacts, Calendars, and Notes
  • Photos, if you turned on iCloud Photos
  • iMessages, text (SMS) and multimedia (MMS) messages, if you sync messages with iCloud 
  • Data stored in other cloud services, like Gmail and Exchange mail
  • Apple Mail data
  • Apple Pay information and settings
  • Face ID or Touch ID settings
  • iCloud Music Library and App Store content
  • Offline maps

  1. The carrier is providing the bandwidth and has nothing to do with the phone‘s software not initiating upload of content. I have a true mobile flatrate which means that I can down- and upload unlimited amounts of content.
  2. I am not using WiFi at home.
  3. When I’m at home, it’s usually connected to an external charger or to the iMac so the battery is usually fully charged.

Sometimes it‘s turned on, eg when I’m using my phone as a hotspot, but most of the time it’s turned off. I also don’t have internet at home anymore ever since I got the flatrate plan for mobile data.


Download: 92.6 Mbps

Upload: 32.0 Mbps

Ping: 20 ms

Jitter: 1 ms


It has never worked yet, not when plugged into Mac, not when plugged via charging adapter into a socket, not when not plugged into anything at all. The automatic backup did work when I still had WiFi at home and it could backup via WiFi, but auto backup via mobile data doesn’t work and I don’t know why.

By default, iPhones do not perform iCloud backups over mobile data if they are connected to a Wi-Fi network. The device prioritizes Wi-Fi for backups due to its typically faster speeds and lack of data limits compared to mobile data.


Although you mentioned that you have the setting enabled: Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup by toggling on "Back Up Over Mobile Data" 


  1. Check if your Carrier Supports it.
  2. Even with mobile data backup enabled, your iPhone won't use mobile data for backups when connected to Wi-Fi, to avoid consuming unnecessary mobile data.
  3. The iPhone also ensures sufficient battery level or a connection to a charger before starting an iCloud backup, whether on Wi-Fi or mobile data.
