Change notification email on Apple Account

Following the instructions to remove or change the Notification Email, the message arises:

Continue on one of your devices

On an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch go to Settings > Apple Account. On a Mac go to System Preferences or System Settings > Apple Account.

What does this mean? I see nothing to do on my devices or my desktop. Other questions along this line here don't reveal a solution.

I have been able to add alternate email addresses for my Apple Account in the System Settings on my Mac.

But the Apple Account overview online is still showing an email address that will soon be out of date as the "Notification Email," which seems to be what Apple uses as its main way of communicating with me. See the last item in the image below.

No matter how I click to change or remove this Notification Email, all that happens is that I'm adding alternate email addresses for the Account. The Notification Email remain the same, soon-to-be useless address.

So, my question remains: how do I change the Notification Email?

What instructions are you following? An Apple help document? If so, which one. A link would be helpful.

What happens when you go into your Apple Account on a device? What's the next step in the instructions you're looking at?

I find nothing in Apple's documentation about a "notification" email.

The "Continue on one of your devices" message is likely part of the implementation of the Passkey feature for iOS, iPad 16 and Ventura. It is currently only supported by certain web sites and apps, including the Safari app (others have mentioned some other browsers so you will just have to try different ones). The site or app is making a call to your trusted device(s) for you to authenticate from the device itself (using Face ID or Touch ID). Tap Settings, then your name at the top and it should prompt you for Face ID or Touch ID, then approve the action on the other device. Using passkeys is described in this support article —> Use passkeys to sign in to websites and apps on iPhone - Apple Support

I just spent 50 minutes chatting with “Nancy” at Apple Support. She gave me the same out-dated, irrelevant information twice, always maintaining that the “notification” email is the same as the “primary” email address. I'm so disappointed that Apple can’t get their account info page working correctly for customers.

It works just fine for most people. And that makes it all the harder to figure out why it doesn't work for a very small number.
