Disappearing date in footer of Pages document

I inserted a date into the footer of my Pages document and it is visible when I'm editing it. However, when I click anywhere outside of the footer, the date disappears. It reappears when I click back into the footer. The other elements of the footer (plain text and a page number) remain visible throughout. The date is visible when I print to PDF, just not on-screen. The text of the date is formatted to be black text and the background is white. What's going on? Any ideas?
