How can I verify that my iPhone is legitimate?

I bought what I believed to be a refurbished iPhone 15 from a website (a subsidiary of a major internet retailer). At first glance it appears to be an iPhone but the back cover does not give a model number and does not say iPhone on it. I plugged the serial number into Apple's serial number checker and that site accepts the serial number as being that of an iPhone 15 but reports the Purchased Date as January 01, 2007.

Is this phone really an Apple product - I thought he serial number checker was suppose to be foolproof - is that not the case?

Or

is it possibly a device that is reporting goodness knows what information (passwords, log in details etc) to a shady operator?

The phone is legitimate, but it has been refurbished / remanufactured either by Apple, an Apple approved company, or a company not approved by Apple.

If you can provide the Model Number of your iPhone.......Settings > General > About > Model Number.......that might tell us a bit more about who refurbished the phone. We do NOT need the serial number, so please do NOT post that for security reasons.

The original warranty on the phone has expired, but the seller that you bought from might have offered a warranty on the phone. Check with them on that.

Thanks.

The model number listed on the box that it came in (with the word "Phone" and not "iPhone" in Apple typeface) is 5TM43LL/A. I believe a normal 256GB iPhone 15 would be xTM43LL/A.

The phone does connect to the App store.

I now understand that it is no surprise that the model number is not engraved on the back of the phone. However, I read elsewhere that the model number should be visible - in tiny, tiny font - in the USB-C slot. My eyesight is not what it was, but I can see nothing there.
