Here's what's happening: (Also see the pic below)

  1. Personal Hotspot Handoff: Even when Personal Hotspot is disabled on your iPhone, your Mac might still see it listed as an available connection due to Instant Hotspot. This feature allows your Mac (or other Apple devices) to recognize and connect to your iPhone's hotspot automatically if:
    1. Both devices are signed in with the same Apple ID.
    2. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled on both devices.
  2. Caching of Known Networks: If your Mac previously connected to your iPhone’s hotspot, it may cache the network's details. This could make the hotspot appear in your Wi-Fi list even if it's currently disabled. However, attempting to connect typically won't work if the hotspot isn't active.
  3. Try Connecting: While the option to connect might show up, the success of connecting will depend on whether your iPhone allows the connection on demand. If Hotspot is truly off, the Mac won't establish a connection.

If you want to avoid confusion or remove the hotspot from the list:

  • Ensure "Allow Others to Join" is toggled off on your iPhone's Hotspot settings.
  • Forget the network on your Mac by going to System Settings > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced and removing your iPhone's hotspot from the list of known networks.
