Battery on my Macbook Pro M4 Pro drains pretty quickly

Hi, I just got a new MacBook Pro 2024 with the M4 Pro chip.

I’ve noticed that the battery drains pretty quickly, even though I’m not doing anything intensive. What could be the issue?

I upgraded from a MacBook Air M2 and expected the Pro to have better battery life, but it’s actually the other way around.

Thanks for your help! :)

Troubleshooting a New Mac's Draining Battery:

Get this Serviced, or Return this (If Applicable):

Who is the seller? If Apple, then know that you have 14 days to return it. It comes with a one-year, out-of-the-box, limited warranty. So, if deemed a faulty device, they'd replace the battery. So, if purchased through Apple, then take this in for a Genius Bar Appointment at your local Apple Store. There, it will be diagnosed, and you'll be provided with your options. If the seller is not Apple, then you'll have to perform a direct return through them.

Fixed:

The issue was caused by an error in Google Drive sync. Upon checking CPU usage, I noticed the task had been running for over 100 hours and consuming a lot of resources. I reinstalled Google Drive, which significantly improved battery life.

Other Fixes:

  • Background Activities

New MacBooks often perform many background tasks, such as indexing or syncing iCloud files. These processes can take a few days to complete. Once finished, battery life typically improves.

  • Battery Calibration

To calibrate your battery:

    • Charge your MacBook to 100%.
    • Allow it to discharge to close to 1%.
    • Then, charge it back to 100%.
