Sold iPhone on eBay, buyer is asking for passcode?

I completely erased the iPhone and double checked that we did it correctly before shipping it off.

when the buyer got it, they said it was locked with a passcode.

I looked into it again, making sure giving the passcode is okay.

I sent them the only passcode I know would have been on the iPhone.

they keep saying it’s the wrong code.

i found a question and answer here on Apple discussions and found a person with similar issue.

they said the same thing, passcode apparently wasn’t working.

someone in the comments said to do a reset with holding down all buttons and go to iTunes and such.. I took a screen shot of it. And set to the buyer.

now I’m only getting scolded for selling it and think this is ridiculous.

I would make sure the iPhone is no longer showing in your account by going to Settings > [name on top], and scroll to the bottom on your current device. If the old phone is listed there, tap on it and it can be removed. They will then be able to set it up as new using the link you provided and there won't be any Passcode issue.

Otherwise, they are looking to scam you by trying to get you to send them the money back or they simply set the device up and forgot the passcode they used and are blaming you.

Beware of potential scams. If you prepared and erased it following the instructions at What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support it would not be asking for a passcode and you should never share your passcode or password with anyone.

The reset you saw and sent them is If you forgot your iPhone passcode or your iPhone is disabled - Apple Support
