Mac Mini Cursor Disrupts Finder, Apps

For the last couple of months, the mouse cursor on my Mac Mini (2020 M1, Sonoma 14.6.1) has caused problems when it hovers over Finder windows and certain apps, sometimes making it impossible to run those apps. In the video linked below, you'll see that when I click on a directory in Finder, it opens a subfolder, but as soon as it attempts to open another subfolder that extends beyond the Finder boundary, all of the columns become unstable and start to creep back toward the left. When I move the cursor outside the columns, the creeping stops, but as soon as I move it back over, the creeping starts again.

Over this same time period, the only way I can play any files (audio or video) in Quicktime is to press play and pull the cursor outside the QT window; if the cursor is left over it, the file just stutters and does not progress at all. And just now, when I opened Adobe Premiere Pro for the first time in many months to resume work on a project, I couldn't access the files in Adobe's finder window; it just froze up completely and wouldn't respond to any mouse commands.

My earlier attempts to diagnose this problem came back with the advice to reduce the amount of memory pressure on the system by shutting down programs and processes not currently needed. I've been doing that and keeping an eye on the memory pressure using the Activity Monitor utility, which currently shows the pressure to be well within the safe (green) range, so that doesn't seem to be the problem.

Can someone please help me diagnose (and fix) this mysterious problem? I now have a media project that I need to complete within the next week or so, but I won't be able to do it if I can't use Adobe Premiere, so I will greatly appreciate any help.

Thank you.

It will help us get a good idea of what is causing your problem if you provide a report of your system, that way we do not have to play 20 questions with you. The report we are requesting does NOT provide any personal information and is extremely safe to use. Please navigate towww.Etrecheck.com and download the free version of EtreCheck. Once you have you downloaded the app and installed it, please run the report and save it. This report will help us get a good idea what has been installed on your system and help us be able to diagnose what may be wrong.

When you have your report, you can attach it when you reply to this message and we can then review it and help you determine what is needed to get your system running well again.

For instructions on how to download your EtreCheck report and attach it to your reply to this message please click How to use the Add Text Feature When Post… - Apple Community It is helpful to us if you download the report to your Desktop.

Nope, Trusteer is still installed per the EtreCheck report you posted on 12/31/24 PST. That means either you did not follow the Trusteer instructions for uninstalling or the app simply did not uninstall.

Please download FindAnyFile (the free version is fine) and have it search your system with anything that says:

Trusteer

and have it move that to the Trash and then empty the Trash. This may take a little while so go out for lunch while it's working. Next, restart the computer in Safe Mode and connect the keyboard via a USB cable to the back of the computer so you are not using a wireless connection that might or might not work for a Safe Mode restart. If your keyboard does not have the ability to connect via USB get an inexpensive USB keyboard like USB Keyboard and Mouse and do the Safe Mode restart.

Once you have successfully restarted in Safe Mode then restart normally and re-test. Please post back with your results.

Leanna,

The primary problem is you have Trusteer antivirus installed on the computer. Installing the following types of third party apps is REALLY bad for Mac OS and is likely the reason you are having a problem.

  • Antivirus apps
  • Cleaning apps
  • VPN apps
  • Security apps
  • Maintenance Apps

Please locate the uninstall instructions for Trusteer and please uninstall ASAP. These types of apps do NOTHING that Mac OS cannot already do. All they do is make Mac OS unstable, creates odd behaviors, makes Mac OS appear buggy and does NOTHING in return! All that Mac OS needs to remain secure, quick and stable is simply to be kept up-to-date and to restart the computer about 1x per week. Other than that please leave Mac OS and you will be rewarded with a stable, fast and secure computing experience!

Thank you for the response, but unfortunately, the problem persists even though I've removed Trusteer. (Here's a screenshot of search results, which shows matches only in the EtreCheck report.) I also tried a suggestion from an older thread to install and run Malwarebytes to see if there were any system elements left from Trusteer, but the scan came up completely clean.

Do you have any other suggestions? If at all possible, I need to get the computer running normally ASAP because of some imminent deadlines, so thank you both again and in advance.

I have used FindAnyFile two or three times now to locate and delete all files that contain the word "trusteer," but every time I've restarted the computer and rerun the search, they keep showing back up, including matches in the Library/Containers directory. I haven't tried a Safe Mode restart yet because I don't have a wired keyboard I can use to follow your instructions, but I should be able to try that tomorrow or Friday. One additional question: with a Safe Mode restart, do I need *both* a wired keyboard and mouse, or will a wired keyboard work by itself?

Thanks again.

If you cannot get rid of Trusteer then then you will have to do an erase and install. You should have both a wired keyboard and mouse, like USB Keyboard and Mouse, very cheap and can be used to troubleshoot Bluetooth connection issues if they ever occur.

When you do an erase and install, that means you wipe the internal drive clean and use the recover partition to install Mac OS. Then. you can restore your data files from your backup and manually re-install any third party apps. This is a lot of work and also a testimony to how nasty third party apps as I have mentioned earlier can be!!!!! They can make a total mess of Mac OS.
