Upgrading SSD storage on 2018 Mac mini

I have a 2018 mini with 16gb ram but only 121 gb flash storage.

can I upgrade the internal flash storage or is it better to get an external drive

Buying new Mac mini My 2014 mini has 1 TB and I am using 490GB. A basic new mini only has 256GB. (1) Are there performance issues between getting external drive or upgrading new mini to 512GB ? and (2) if I use external drive, is there an advantage in upgrading new mini to 16GB RAM?

Internal storage of the 2018 Mac mini cannot be upgraded.

You best and only option will be an external drive.
