My iPhone 11 count screen time when it’s off

Hello, as I am trying to cut down on my screen time, I started to switch of my Iphone 11 at night. But now I found out that the ‘Screen time’ feature counts all the hours when my phone is actually off. So I can’t use it anymore to assess my actual screen time. How is this possible and how can I fix this?

Same here. I know for a fact that I turned off my phone between 3:30pm-10:30pm on Wednesday; completely powered down, and not plugged into anything (I do not manage a family plan or share screen time across devices). My usage on that day indicates that I was actively using something - which appears to be Settings - for the full 7 hours it was off:

I also want to cut down on and be more mindful of my phone usage, but this Screen Time bug is really messing with me. I'm trying to remember to close out of apps regularly, especially before I go to sleep (it's my wakeup alarm clock, so I do have to keep it on overnight), but I don't even know if that's any help, especially since the iPhone is logging screen time while it's completely turned off!

I just got off the phone with support, he checked everything but couldn’t find the source of the problem.

However he did mention that the issue is known at Apple and that they are working on a solution. It will be included in a future update but he couldn’t say when.

until then I’ll just to back to flight mode at night, that does seem to work with regards to the screen time registration. Thanks!!

Thanks for the screenshot. I have seen this same issue posted many times here on these forums and have yet found a reason why it still reports that as Screen Time. I do not see that on my device, which makes it difficult to troubleshoot on my end.

  • When you say the phone is off, do you mean by holding the side button and powering down the phone using the slider or a single click to shut the screen off?
  • When you go to Settings > Screen Time > Share Across Devices, it this turned on?
  • Are you the Organizer of a Family Sharing plan?
  • Are you on iOS 18.2?

I understand that it is not helpful at all reporting Screen Time when you are not actively using the device and I agree it makes no sense at all when you are trying to reduce your Screen Time. You deserve an answer as well as others who see the same thing and you always have the option to contact Apple directly, but I will continue to help any way I can to figure out why some are seeing that on their device and others are not.

Thanks so much for trying to help!

The answers to your questions:

  • By switching off I mean powering down using the slider.
  • My screen time is not shared across devices
  • I’m not the organizer of a family plan
  • and I just updated this morning, to see if it would solve the issue but unfortunately it didn’t.

Thanks again for trying to solve the puzzle, I think I will try and contact Apple especially since you mention there are others with the same problem!
