iMovie transitions, Ken Burns effect, timing, and photo repetition on MacBook Pro

When using iMovie on a Mac, how do you:

1) Add the same transition between ALL clips throughout the slideshow.

2) Get rid of the Ken Burns effect. I went to Settings and changed Photo Placement from Ken Burns to Fit, but the Ken Burns effect remains.

3) Adjust the time per slide/transition ... or make the slideshow fit the music.

4) Have each photo only appear once instead of four times (as in the screenshot - for four seconds, I guess) so I don't have to scroll back and forth so much.

Thank you! I used to use the Photos app to create slideshows but have had quality issues with the exported video jumping and snagging. iMovie seems way harder to use so far.

Hi,

When you have so many questions, best to ask them in separate posts. However, here are the answers to your questions.

  1. Adding the same transition to all clips: Choose your transition and add it to the first clip in the timeline. Then in the timeline select the transition that you added and do an Edit/Copy of it. Select the remaining clips as a group in the timeline and do an Edit/Paste, that will add the same transition to all of the selected clips. For the Cross-dissolve transition you can simply select all of the clips in the timeline as a group, and do an Edit/Add Cross Dissolve.

2.Eliminating the Ken Burns effect: Change your settings to "Fit" before creating and starting the project.

3.Adjusting duration: Select one slide or a group of slides. Click on the "i" button to the right of the tool bar at the top of your screen. Enter your desired slide duration in the duration box that has appeared below and to the right of the "i" button. Press "Return" on your keyboard to set the changes.

Alternatively, you can trim the audio clip to fit and add a fade at the end. Or, you can speed or slow down the audio clip by Control-clicking on it and selecting Show Speed Editor from the drop down menu that appears. That will cause a speed editor handle to appear in the upper right corner of the clip. Slide the speed editor handle to the left to speed up the audio, and to the right to slow down the audio.

4.Eliminating multiple images displaying on the clip thumbnails in the timeline: Move to the left the slider that is located above and to the right of the timeline to shrink the clips so that they show only one image on the clip thumbnail.

The slider has no impact on the time of display. It is simply a zooming feature for timeline display of the clips. A 10 minute movie will display for 10 minutes no matter how expanded or not expanded the timeline. If your timeline is 10 inches long when fully expanded, and you shrink it to 3 inches with the slider the playhead will look like it is moving more slowly, but will be covering the same number of frames in the same amount of time as the longer timeline.

That’s exactly the way it works with photos. You drag the edge to shorten or lengthen the duration. With video clips, you can’t increase the original playing time but you can shorten it by dragging an edge. Unlike with a photo, decreasing the playing time of a video clip would eliminate display of the shortened part of the footage.
