What causes spoken content to stutter on iOS 18?

I use spoken content in the accessibility app to read aloud kindle books all the time. After I updated to iOS 18 on my Iphone 13, the playback stutters and plays back intermittently where you can't understand the full sentence. I have tried this on three cars, three automakers, three carplays, two with bluetooth, one with apple certified connection cord. It doesn't matter. I turned off carplay and just used media on a car to see if it was a car play issue, and it still did it. Then if I switch to a different app like spotify, it does it there too. I have to kill the spotify app and relaunch and then it will work. However, spoken content does not work regardless of restarting phone, killing the app, turning off the spoken content menu bar and turning it back on. This is so disappointing as I listen to books all the time. If an audio book isn't available, I use the spoken content feature. I'm currently on 18.2 with no update available. I keep thinking it will be better with next update, but no go. I haven't tried another iphone in the house. That is my next test, but I am wondering if anyone has had any issues since 18. iOS 17 I had no problem.

On a side note, since 18, I haven't had my phone autoreverse to some default voice like Samantha. Siri #4 is sticking. So that's positive.

Manullascard ~ Yes, we know you're also affected by this issue, but you've been ignoring the questions that may solve the issue! So again: you've said in this other thread: "...battery capacity went down from 99% to 97%..."

As your iPhone 13 could be 3½ years old, that high battery capacity suggests that the battery may have been replaced. You can check that by going here:

Settings > General > About > (Parts & Service)

...Does it say anything there about the battery being Unknown or Genuine?

My old iPhone 13 has this issue and my brand new iPhone 16 Pro Max also has this issue even though it was setup from scratch (not from backup).

  • Text to speech glitches and comes in spurts using carplay
  • without CarPlay, it plays fine over Bluetooth or via usb connection
  • Can’t find any way to fix from the car other than disabling CarPlay which isn’t a viable solution

Although 85% is above Apple's suggested level of 80% for replacing the battery, it's only an algorithmic estimate of a dynamic chemical process. Apple can test the battery so that you'd know one way or the other. And 3 years is the tyoical time for batteries to start acting up — especially with power demanding functions like over-the-air spoken content.

As your iPhone 13 could be 3½ years old, that high battery capacity suggests that the battery may have been replaced. If so, was it replaced at an Apple Store or by other qualified technician using a genuine iPhone battery?...

mbkarrdna ~ Your iPhone 13 could be 3 years old and the long process of applying an iOS update to an iPhone with a weak, aging battery can be the proverbial "straw that broke the camel's back." So...

Does your iPhone 13 still have its original battery?

And what's the Maximum Capacity % here?...

Here's an update. I'm not sure when it started because I test all the time. If I chose to turn off carplay within the bluetooth option such as on Uconnect (Chrysler) or My Chevrolet and just connect bluetooth. Then I use bluetooth audio only, then it doesn't skip. Hopefully I am making sense. It is just a bummer because it will not work inside of carplay. So I can't have a map going if I am doing it this way.

I’m not using CarPlay and I’m still having issues with Spoken Content on my iPhone 13, and I’m using the Siri neural text to speech.

It randomly cuts out, while I’m listening any text, it stops reading randomly in the middle of it.

Sometimes the feature doesn’t work when I swipe the two fingers from the top.

It also changes languages by itself, I’m listening something in Spanish, my native language, and then it randomly starts to speak in English, Russian, German or Greek.

I’ve reset all settings, factory reset my iPhone 13, and even updated it using iTunes, but unfortunately the problem still persists.

Is there another fix? I hate having to deal with issues like this, why can’t it just work fine? I’m super disappointed and frustrated

I encountered the same issue on an iphone 15 pro. Wile on 17 i could listen to my books with text to speech engine over carplay sound system without any issue, after updating to ios 18, this verry important feature is broken and i am unable to find any solution. @AppleSupport, can you provide a fix for this???? My phone was almost brand new when updating to 18. Battery was 100%. One of the strange things was, during this stuttering, i opened the camera app to record the bug and send it to apple, the stuttering stopped. When i closed the camera app, the stuttering begin again. The app developer suggested that the issue is at ios, not his app

Same issue here on iOS 18.3.2, been waiting for an update to fix this.. on iPhone 13, tried it with iPhone 15 as well…same stuttering/ choking for spoken content…tried different voice, same problem. No issue if I just connect via Bluetooth ..I have been setting to speaker phone for my daily reads hoping for a fix soon. Never had problem on iOS 17..it’s getting annoying that the fix is taking so long.
