Water and electronics do not make happy bedfellows. Your iPad is not designed to be water resistant. While it may survive being splashed with water if immediately dried, it will almost certainly suffer irreparable damage if allowed to get wet or is submerged.

You would be best advised to take your iPad along to the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to assess your iPad. If repair isn’t possible, the iPad can be responsibly recycled - and you’ll be in the best possible place to explore possible replacement:

Not everyone is close to an Apple store—it's a 200-mile round trip on a two-lane highway for me—but you can use Apple's mail-in/ship-n service. I used that when I needed a battery service for one of our iPad and it was excellent.

Apple does not "repair" your iPad but instead replaces an identically equipped model that has been refurbished in Apple's centralized repair/refurbishment centers. Apple refurbs have a new outer case and battery. Expect to hear a high price quote for that service if your Jaques Cousteau iPad is eligible.

You can use the estimator tool on this Apple support page:

iPad Repair and Service - Apple Support

to find out:

  • if your iPad is eligible for service, and
  • the cost.

Remember, Apple does not service older devices unless your country/region has consumer law that extends the usual service time period, which is explained in this Apple article:
