Unable to import M4A files into the Music app

Boy, Music is not very smart. Why doesn't Music automatically recognize whatever format the user wants to import and do it! Where is Apple AI when needed? What hoops do I jump through to get older Apple audio files into newer Music app??

How to import content? I have some .m4a files that I would like to play in the Apple Music app. Is this possible? There are old methods that rely on iTunes, but that has been removed from current iOS and MacOS. Is there any way to import, add, or play these files? The files play normally in Quicktime, so I know they are valid audio files. Just need to find a way to make Apple Music see files that are outside their catalog.

Using iTunes m4p audio files in iMovie? I've created many personal use video projects in iMovie using songs from my iTunes library. I have never had a problem with compatibility. Now, for the first time, many of the songs in my library are not compatible with iMovie. Why is this the case and what can I do?

I’d expect m4a to import directly, unless it’s DRM’d, or an audiobook or such. Or mis-name’d. Or corrupt.

Maybe it’s 5.1 surround, mis-labeled?

What codec was used?

Get Info or the command-line file command might show more details.
