iOS 18.2 how to delete duplicate photos from iphone

  • Not using iCloud to backup or sync photos.
  • iPhone gets synced and backed up to MacBook Pro (OS 15.2)
  • Duplicate photos do not show in Photos on MacBook Pro so they can’t be deleted there prior to syncing.
  • unselecting “photos” in the Photos tab in the sync dialog on MacBook Pro prior to syncing doesn’t remove them from the iPhone. This should remove all photos from the iPhone.
  • when selecting a duplicate photo on iPhone, the option to edit or click on the trash icon is not available
  • On the iPhone, “Duplicates” does not show up in the Utilities list

Any suggestions?

On the iPhone, “Duplicates” do not exist in the Utilities list anymore.

Since I have updated it to IOS 18.2 and two updates before it, the option disappeared.

If you have been using Finder-sync to "push" photos from the Mac to the phone, the way to remove them is not to unselect the "photos" option but to select fewer photos.

I have not tested it, as I cannot use Finder-sync, but it would not be surprising if those photos were exempt from on-phone duplicate detection.

No trash can icon available for certain photos is a common indication of Finder-synced photos, which are not subject to normal Photos library management.

"Duplicates" would not appear in Utilities if there are no detected duplicates, and it sounds like all of your apparent duplicates are outside normal Photos management tools because they got there by Finder-sync.
