Epson Scanner problems since updating to Sequoia 15.2

Since updating to Sequoia 15.2 my Epson Scan 2 app does not connect me to the scanner on my XP-960, although the printer connects and functions normally. (Except it incorrectly notifies me that the printer is out of ink, which it is not!) If I turn off the Firewall in the network settings, then the scanner app works. Not an ideal solution by any means. However, with the firewall turned back on, I can access the scanner by selecting 'Open Scanner' from the Printer & Scanner settings.

Does anyone know if this debacle is an Apple bug or is Epson being slow in catching up to the Sequoia updates?

Thanks for the suggestion and yes - there are two items enabled, one is Epson Scan 2 and the other is a Unix executable labeled Epson Scan 2

I have done the usual troubleshooting steps of disconnecting Computer and Printer/scanner from power and reconnecting and restarting. I have also tried a usb cable connection from computer to printer/scanner. This works for both functions and suggests that along with the part that the firewall plays in this issue, there could be a wifi/internet issue behind it. However, the fact that the printer function still works through the wifi network while the scanner function does not contradicts this suspicion to some degree.

I am in contact locally with a number of Mac users who have experienced similar Epson problems since updating to Sequoia, not just 15.2 but the first version as well. They are all using iMac 24"s while I am using a 2020 iMac 27".

I have deleted and reinstalled the Scan 2 supporting software but the problem persists.

Not sure if what I will offer here will be helpful to you because my devices are slightly different, but maybe it will help.

I have an XP-820 Epson Printer/Scanner which dates from 2015. My MacBook Pro is on Sequoia 15.1.1. The first time I opened Epson Scan 2 after updating from Sonoma to Sequoia it asked permission to access devices on the network and then also made me confirm the Epson scanner that it found on the network. After that, Epson Scan 2 does find the scanner and offer to scan, preview, etc.

In System Preferences Privacy and Security => Local Network I see five Epson entries: Epson Scan 2, Epson Software Updater, Epson Scanner (which is a driver as far as I can tell), Epson Software Updater Agent, and EpsonLowInkReminder Agent. All five are enabled. The ink levels are properly shown, and I can scan from either Epson Scan 2 or from Image Capture. I actually use Image Capture usually. But Epson Scan 2 also works, and it should for you because I believe your device is newer than mine.

You might consider removing the device from your MacOS Settings Printers and Scanners and reinstalling from scratch all the Epson software and drivers.I did not do that when I went to Sequoia, but did do that when I upgraded to Sonoma, which restored the full functionality. You mentioned reinstalling Epson Scan 2 but I think a fresh install of the entire device and all its drivers and other supporting software might be needed.

Similar problem. If I turn off the mac's firewall (system settings/network/firewall) Epson scan 2 works. What's weird is the epson scan2 Utility.app and Epson Scan 2.app are listed to allow incoming connections. It used to work before the macos upgrade. I'm thinking bug or another app needs to be added to the firewall now.

FYI- I upgraded the scanner's firmware and reinstalled all software. The firmware updater doesn't install on 15.2 so I used an old Windows PC.

Thanks for those suggestions. As I mentioned in the initial post, if I go to Printers and Scanners in Settings, then go to the pane on info and settings for the XP- 960, I can launch the scanner from there. The scanning pane is headed 'Image Capture' so it appears to be a shortcut to that app. It would be quicker to follow den.thed's suggestion to put Image Capture in the dock (thanks for that!), which I will do until I can find a fix for the Epson glitch. In the mean time, I will follow your suggestion to remove and reinstall everything associated with this Epson device.
Thanks for your help

I also have put Image Capture in the dock for easy access! But I am pretty sure a complete removal and reinstall of everything Epson will bring things back like they were before. I actually prefer Image Capture, it has a cleaner interface and everything is very easy with it. But I'm like you, I want to have all the options available that came with the scanner/printer (even if I don't use them much if at all). I also installed the other tools and image software that Epson provides, but I find the built in Apple tools better in the end. Also, you want to have (and deserve to have) the ink level indicator working properly!

I had tried everything I have read everywhere else and nothing was working until I found the above suggestion. I followed your recommendation regarding System Preferences Privacy and Security => Local Network. My Epson Scan 2 was not enabled. Once I enabled...working like it used to prior to Sequoia 15 update. Thanks!!!

Does "Image Capture" in your Applications folder work for scanning..?

see > Scan images in Image Capture on Mac - Apple Support

If it does, you can keep an Image Capture icon on your Dock for easy access.

FWIW I have never installed any Epson software on our Mac's and have had no problem printing or scanning from either of our Epson ET printers.

Latest on my Epson Scanner issues - I updated to Sequoia 15.3 last week. Today I unplugged the USB cable and tried to open the Scan2 utility. For the first time, it took me to a pane in which two scanners were identified, one with an IP address. Selecting either led to an error which I could only exit by force-ejecting the Scan2 utility. I then went through the wifi connection utility on the printer, and when it had successfully confirmed the connection, it printed out two reports. One noted that the 'Network is working correctly' then continued with '* A router/access point channel conflict has been detected'.

So I went to printer settings and removed the two printers that were listed. (the second one had appeared after I plugged in the USB cable connection.) I then re-installed the printer and restarted and tried to connect with the Scan2 utility. Initially it opened the same pane as before, but there was nothing listed, but I was able to search for a scanner and once I had done that, the scanner settings page appeared and things now seem to be back to normal. As a side issue, the Epson Software Updater, which would not open or connect after the OS update to Sequoia 15.2 is now functioning properly.

It seems to me that all the evidence is pointing to an 'unintended consequence' arising from the MacOS Sequoia upgrade and that the Sequoia 15.3 update has fixed that issue. It's just so annoying, frustrating and time-wasting that neither Apple or Epson can acknowledge these issues when they arise, to give some assurance that they will be fixed 'in due course' as resources permit.

Many thanks for this simple explanation. After a good bit of other online research, I'd failed to find an answer until now. Just followed your steps -- enable the slider for Epson Scan 2 in System Preferences => Privacy & Security => Local Network -- and then Scan 2 opened without a problem.
