I updated to iOS 18 and now I can't hide alerts in Messages

I recently updated my iPhone to iOS 18. Everything seems to be fine except for one annoying thing. The "Hide Alerts" option in Message no longer functions. I keep getting alerts and notifications from the groups that I have silenced. Is this a bug?

Happening to me too. One particular group with one iPhone and one android user. tried all the usual suggestions… close all apps, restart, toggle hide alerts, etc

This has been happening since iOS 18.2 and has stayed in iOS 18.3. This only happens in RCS group chats and it’s very annoying to receive so many notifications from these group chats I have set to hide alerts. Would love to hear acknowledgment from an Apple rep.

Same here. Updated to 18.2 and my family in-law group of iOS and Android users no longer hides notifications. I’ve toggled it on and off, restarted the phone, reset all setting’s and it persists.

It’s the only thing I need alerts muted for because they have habits of texting at 3 am my time, but I need all other ever changing list of numbers calls and texts alerts to come thru for my job.

You’re lucky it’s fixed for you, but it most certainly is NOT fixed for everyone (including me) with 18.2.1. I’ve tried everything (toggling, rebooting, etc) and the “hide alerts” switch on individual messages or group message chains seems to have zero effect. Still pops up on screen, still buzzes my phone and watch when they come through, and most annoyingly, still reads the message if I have my AirPods in. Infuriating.

Same here. Def not fixed. Also, when I turned on RCS again to test is post update, numerous old messages came through for the first time (non-RCS wasn’t working properly).

so I resorted to changing the text tone for those ppl to None for sounds and haptics, choosing to get messages again.

SOLUTION (for me)

For the chat it was happening in (RCP texting with three iOS phones and one Android) I was suddenly getting Haptic notifications despite having the chat muted. I tried several things, including turning on and off the Hide setting on the chat and the individuals. This sometimes worked for a bit.

What solved it for me was going into each individual contact (I went through the "5 people" menu at the top of the chat record), selecting "Edit" and setting each person's Text Tone sound and Haptic vibration to "none."

That makes some intuitive sense but should obviously (as in the past) not override the selection you make for the chat as a whole. It also might create problems if you want to mute the chat but not the individuals, but hey.

FYI -

I've tried the suggested option to "Reset All Settings." It did work for like a day, and then it went back to not hiding alerts again. I wouldn't waste your time. Otherwise you'll be spending a while logging into all of your apps again, reconnecting WiFi signals, setting up all of your alarms, etc. Apple needs to fix this ASAP. It's annoying and started with IOS 18. We're now coming up on 18.3.1 soon.

So I guess we’re stuck with this garbage happening nonstop? Really dislike waking my wife and kid up at all hours of the night since I have friends that work overnight. I noticed last night the ringtone volume was high even when I set it to the lowest setting before vibrate only
