Is Apple Intelligence free of cost?
Is there a price for this?

I am not computer savvy so what you just wrote makes no sense to me. I don't know what Chat GPT is and how it would apply to this. I'm sure your answer is very cohesive but to a novice when it comes to this kind of jargon, I am a moron.
ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence (AI) tool developed by OpenAI, a company that specializes in natural language processing and machine learning. It’s a chatbot designed to have human-like conversations and generate text in response to user prompts. Here’s a summary of its capabilities and characteristics.
Think of it as Siri with a PhD. Why it is part of this discussion, is when Apple released iOS 18.2, they included an extension to ChatGPT, which you can sign into using your Apple Account. To use it as opposed to Siri with Apple Intelligence, instead of saying "hey Siri what's the temperature in Tucson, Arizona right now." You'd instead say "hey Siri, ask ChatGPT what the temperature is in Tucson, Arizona right now."
Further to this discussion, the free version of ChatGPT doesn't offer unlimited access to asking it for something, unless you pay for the Pro version, which does offer more pro features, and just about no restriction on hany many times you can ask it something. You can upgrade to the Pro version inside your phone when you add the ChatGTP extension.
Please feel free to let me know if that didn't help you.

Note that you can get a paid subscription to ChatGPT that gives you some additional features. If you opt to do that, you can add that account to Apple Intelligence.
But WOWZA........$20 per month for the paid version of ChatGPT. I read that the pro plan offers more advanced AI capabilities, faster response times, priority access to new features, custom GPT creation, and higher rate limits, making them more suitable for power users, researchers, and businesses that require extensive AI processing.
None of which I need, that's for sure.

ChatGPT is the artificial intelligence service that helps power Apple Intelligence. You automatically get all the free features when using Apple Intelligence. If you want the additional features that lobsterghost1 mentioned in their post, you have to pay $20/month. For most of us, that's not necessary. So, if you're not interested in the details, that's fine. You can still use Apple Intelligence.
But if you are at all interested, you could do worse than start here:

I certainly haven't sprung for it, either.

It's free on compatible models.
