what is the path (folder) that iMovie uses for Music

You must import them into the Music app, not just copy them into the /Users/yourusername/Music/Music/Media folder. iMovie draws from your Music app's Music Library.

The /Users/yourusername/Music/Music/Media folder is the default location for the Music Library imported media. Manually copying files there does not add them to your Music Library.

Take them out of that folder and then import them into the Music app (Music > File > Import). Music will import the audio files, add them to the Music Library and copy them to that folder. Then they will be in your Music Library and show up in iMovie's "Audio & Video" tab.

iMovie retrieves music from your Music library ... default location being /Users/yourusername/Music/Music/Media. You can also drag music files into your iMovie project(s).

Music inserted into an iMovie project would be incorporated into the project and saved in your iMovie Library.
