Saved card fills in incorrect numbers

Not sure this is the place to raise this issue. A bank debit card saved in my iOS Wallet fills in incorrect expiration date and security code. I don’t find a way to access the stored data to correct it.

Apple is not a bank. It does not approve or decline cards for addition to Apple Wallet. Apple is not a credit card processor. Apple cannot approve or decline a transaction. Apple does not change any numbers or details associated with your account.

Apple provides a secure encrypted storage solution for credit and debit cards. Card information is not stored on your device. Your device encrypts the information and sends it to the Payment Network Operator (Visa, MasterCard etc.) and to your bank. Your bank returns an encrypted dynamic token to Apple for storage in the Secure Element.

The dynamic token provides a unique, one use code for each merchant transaction. Only your bank can decrypt the token and approve or decline a transaction.

Probably more than you ever wanted to know about Apple Pay and security.

Any declines are being sent by your bank or the PNO (if the suspect fraud). If it’s not a real decline, it could be the merchant having issues and just called it a decline. You’ll have to ask your bank’s support team.

You’re welcome. Like I said, probably more than you ever wanted to know, but understanding the fundamentals helps with understand the high level of security and safety Apple Pay brings to the payment processing arena.

If you manually enter numbers, that’s not as secure as Apple Pay. Apple Pay uses encrypted payment tokens and that protects your data and most of your personal information. Obviously, if the product needs to be shipped the merchant will have your name, address etc. But if the merchant is hacked, your financial information is secure.

If you have any other questions or concerns I can assist with, just ask. Happy New Year!

The virtual card in question has the correct account number. The expiration date and security code are incorrect. Payments using the virtual card with the incorrect expedite and security code are declined.

How are different numbers from the ones the bank has assigned a security feature? I don’t understand how Apple can take it upon itself to assign numbers different from thise assigned by the bank.

On second reading of your response it occurs to me that you’re saying the different numbers are provided by the bank when the card is linked to my device.

If so why are payments using the different numbers declined?

Thanks for the detailed explanation. Clearly I had a pretty naive understanding of Apple's handing of third party cards.

I do occasionally get declined when transactions are handled this way. To the best of my recollection, when I am declined and I enter the expiration date and security code printed on the back of the card the transaction always goes through. Perhaps doing that is not a good idea?
