iMovie needed permission

Imovie says needed permission for camera roll and music, but I already gave full camera roll access, but it says I need to allow access to music but give me no options or steps for me to allow music access. I try to press continue but nothing happens, no matter how good my service is, it lags and the screen stays the same and won’t let me use my IMovie.

I had the same problem! Here’s how I fixed it:

  • *very important* Apple Music MUST be installed on your iPad first.
  • Settings - Privacy & Location - Files and Folders - Uncheck iMovie.
  • Settings - General Settings - Transfer or Reset iPad - Reset (it’ll open a menu) - Reset Location and Privacy
  • Open iMovie - Continue - Allow every permission Apple wants you to hand over - Give it your soul if need be
  • iMusic should now show up in Settings - Privacy & Security with iMovie checked, now that you’ve given it permission.
  • Download all raw data and never trust Apple again.

I hope I covered everything!

Note: if the steps in this thread don’t work, and even after resetting privacy and location settings you still can’t get in to give permissions, check the security parental controls: That’s Settings-Screentime-Privacy and Content Restrictions. If this is on, turn it off, go through the location/privacy setting reset again, and reopen the app!

This was the barrier for us, and a brilliant support tech helped us find it. Good luck!

Hello malinda172!

Why is this suddenly necessary to use iMovie? What does location and privacy have to do with using iMovie?

iMovie requires two permissions: full access to Photos to add your photos and videos into a project, and microphone to record audio. These are grouped into a category in settings where you control access to you location and privacy, hence the name. It doesn’t actually need access to your location.

Also, these permissions have always been required, it’s just that Apple decided to add a screen right in the beginning that asks you this instead of throughout the app.

I hope this explains it.
