iMovie stopped working after last update on 12/05/2024

After the last update iMovie is locked to a screen asking authorization for music sharing. Can’t cancel the screen, can’t skip. The app is just useless and I have tons of projects on it. Any workarounds?

HERE’S THE FIX!!!! Everyone Follow this: SETTINGS GENERAL/TRANSFER OR RESET/IPHONE RESET/RESET LOCATION AND PRIVACY. humuhumuhumu shared this in another post and it works. I had the same problem and contacted Apple. They had no clue. I stumbled onto this link iMovie needed permission - Apple Community while on the phone and informed the specialist. She asked for the discussion title, found the page (iMovie needed permission - Apple Community), and instructed me to follow the steps. I did and was able to get into iMovie. It’s dumb what Apple has done without any rhyme or reason.

It didn’t work for me either, so I called support.

In our case we discovered that we had content restrictions on, and that was preventing the location/privacy reset from working.

If you haven’t already, makes sure they’re off under settings-screen time-Content and Privacy Restrictions. If the switch at the top is in the “on” position, *even if everything is set to Allow* (it was on our iPad) turn it off and then try the other privacy/location reset directions listed in this thread again. This worked for us when nothing else did.

If that does not work, definitely call support; they were prompt and great to work with on this!

I seemed to keep digging a hole for myself. I deleted the app (as suggested by Apple support)and reinstalled which effectively deleted all the data(projects )in the app. I thought this was on iCloud but turns out not. The app worked after that but completely empty. I then erased phone and selected a Restore before the update but then discovered there was on a Restore from 1week ago. Even though I checked before erasing that last back up was 24hrs ago. App worked and recovered all projects but missing a weeks work. Be careful before erasing phone as there may be a better way to recover iMovie? I now have to either copy the Projects I have left to an iCloud folder and restore to my latest restore point or be satisfied I lost 1weeks work but still spend the day resetting up phone cards, passwords, apps settings that a restore doesn’t seem to keep.

I love iMovie because it’s a safe Apple app for compiling memories from the endless catalog of photos you take each year and does the job well even though there are quirks which you get used to. But this is so so frustrating !!!! Apple support have someone calling back so hopefully they have a fix.

I had to remove the app and reinstall it again, the problem is that all the data on iCloud, all my iMovie backups simply disappeared, everything was deleted. iCloud is is the most serious disappointment from Apple. Now the only backup I have is the iPhone backup, so the only way to try to get these projects back is to reset the iPhone so I can restore it from the iCloud backup and then get my iMovie projects back. Unbelievable!

Lost everything also. All that work!!! For some reason the update deleted iMovie iCloud folder which I thought would have them backed up. But if the app is able to delete an iCloud folder then what else can be deleted without you knowing. iCloud is meant to be the backup! After support suggested I uninstall the app and reinstall, it resulted in the iMovie folder on the phone being deleted also which I had backed up the exported Final Cut movies as backup. Now these are gone! Tried erasing phone to restore a previous back up but found out Apple don’t have many backups to chose from and still can’t find iMovie folder. Even though I checked before I erased phone that there was a backup from 24hrs ago, it did not appear when I reinstalled the phone. If you have anything still from iMovie then try and copy to a safe place until they can sort it out?

I've always been hesitant about resetting any feature on any device. as it is, iMovie is useless with the last update. humuhumuhumu's advice does work. it will reset all your location and privacy settings, which is painful. the only real change I find is it adds and turns on iMovie under settings>privacy & settings>Media & Apple Music. thanks humuhumuhumu for your work

I got the iMovie files back from a 24 hours old backup but now the app is locked the same way as it was. And I found out the app is not backing up to iCloud anyway. Doesn’t matter if you toggle that option on or off, it doesn’t backup to iCloud and all the local files are hidden, can’t be accessed. It is an evil trap by Apple. Also lost all my safari tabs, hundreds of tabs, that never happened before. All Chrome and Firefox tabs were kept intact, but all safari data that was supposed to be safe iCloud was lost. It is indeed I loud delete instead of backup service. Utter unreliable!
