I need to record all the frames, as jpg or similar, from a video. Is there a method to do this on iMovie?

The frame grab on iMovie is tedious when I want to record upto 60 frames for stacking purposes.

How can I make the process more efficient?

Is there an app/software that will do this?

Thanks Doug

Hi,

iMovie 10 does not have a feature to export image sequences. iMovie 6 did have the feature, if you happen to have that app on an older computer.

According to the Final Cut Pro user manual, Final Cut Pro has a feature to export an image sequence.

There may be other apps out there that can do a frame/image sequence. Otherwise, with iMovie 10 you would need to advance the timeline frame by frame with the left and right arrows on the keyboard, and export each frame as an image. Or take a screen shot of each frame from the preview screen.

You might look into Adobe Premiere Pro and the free version of Davinci Resolve. From what I have read both of those will do image sequences. Adobe Premiere Pro looks pretty straightforward. Davinci Resolve is a bit more complicated. Always confirm for yourself before buying anything.

II found the above by Googling "image sequence". There were tutorial videos.

If you did want to see if FCP would achieve what you required to do , then there is a 90 day free trial.

Currently macOS 14.6 or later is required. It just expires after 90 days, no credit card details e.t.c ,no catches. You can even download a subsequent version for another 90 days if your operating system is compatible.

Thanks Rich,

Sadly, I don't have iMovie 6 or Final Cut Pro.

I have used the frame by frame and export method, it does work but it is tedious doing this for up to 60 images.

The screen shot idea loses image quality and the registration required for stacking.

There may be a command line that would do this for me but my skills don't extend to that method.

My quest continues,

Doug
