Unable to connect Dell 27 UHD USB C Monitor to a new Mac mini

I just bought a Dell 27 UHD USB C Monitor. I cannot get to connect to my new Mac mini. I thought it would be a matter of plug and play. I’ve contacted Dell support… they say it may not be compatible with Mac OS.

Anyone have any input? Much appreciated 🙏🙏

OK. So 3840 x 2160 pixel resolution at 60 Hz, with a USB-C input and two HDMI inputs.

Dell claims that the monitor supports "1.07 billion colours" (i.e., 10-bit-per-channel color). If you connected using HDMI and the HDMI port at either end of the cable was a v2.0 one, you might be forced to choose between 60 Hz (with 8-bit-per-channel color) and 30 Hz (with 10-bit-per-channel color).

I'd expect either of the following to work:

  • A USB-C to USB-C connection from one of the rear-panel USB-C / Thunderbolt ports on your Mac mini, to the USB-C port upstream port on the monitor (port #4 in the illustration). (The front-panel ports on the Mini carry USB only, and will not provide a video signal.).
  • A HDMI to HDMI connection from the Mac mini to the display. This would not connect downstream USB ports.

If you're not getting a signal, check that the monitor is looking for the signal on the input port to which you hooked up a cable. You might need to use the menu controls on the monitor to do that.

...therein lies the problem.... I can't access the menu at all.... just the input source selection! ...I can't do a factory reset because I can't access the menu!!

:-)

I don't recall mentioning a factory reset – but as far as operating the monitor menu controls, have you reviewed the instructions in the Dell S2722QC Monitor User's Guide ?

Two options:

  • Connect HDMI-HDMI using a cable not longer than 3'. After you have it working, connect the Mini to Monitor's upstream port using a C cable not longer than 1m. Refer to the monitor manual to locate it - be sure it's the right port. You will then need to go to the mini's Display settings to choose HDMI over C for display functions

OR

  • Connect Mini to Monitor's upstream port using a C cable not longer than 1m. Refer to the monitor manual to locate it - be sure it's the right port. You can use the supplied cable, but to be honest, it screams Texas all over - very beefy. I would get one from Apple.

I recommend HDMI.
